Carbon accumulation rate in a raised bog in Latvia, NE Europe, in relation to climate warming

The carbon accumulation rate (CAR) over the last 180 years was estimated by measuring carbon concentrations in 1-cm layers in a fine-resolution dated and analysed peat sequence in Teiči Bog, Latvia, NE Europe. We used the Granger causality test to examine the temporal (lagged) relationships between the CAR and the historical climate variables. Our results showed that the average CAR was 192 g C m–2 yr–1 during the last 180 years and 169 g C m–2 yr–1 when excluding the acrotelm where decomposition and the stock of carbon are still not in the balance. Augstie purvi Latvijā ir īpaša ekosistēma. Tie sākuši veidoties pirms apmēram 9000 gadu, līdz ar to purvi ietver informāciju par klimata un veģetācijas izmaiņām un cilvēka darbības atstātajām pēdām. Eiropas Savienībā augstā purva biotopi ir kļuvuši par prioritāri aizsargājamiem. Purvu aizsardzība ir nepieciešama, un tā jāturpina ne tikai Latvijā, bet arī citās Eiropas valstīs. Līdz ar to aktuāli ir purvu apsaimniekošanas pasākumi, kas veicina hidroloģiskā režīma stabilizēšanu un biotopu atjaunošanos.

Augstā purva biotopu atjaunošana īpaši aizsargājamās dabas teritorijās Latvijā

Purvs ir mitra dzīvotne, kurai raksturīga aktīva kūdras veidošanās. Tā ir mājvieta daudziem augiem un dzīvniekiem, kuri nespēj dzīvot citur. Neskarti augstie purvi ir rets un apdraudēts biotops Eiropā. Nosusināšana, kūdras ieguve, mežu stādīšana un zemes rekultivācija pēdējās desmitgadēs ir nelabvēlīgi ietekmējusi purvus. Meliorācijas sistēmu ietekmes dēļ Aizkraukles purvā un mežos, Aklajā, Rožu un Melnā ezera purvā purva biotopi ir izmainījušies. Projekta mērķis ir atjaunot dabisko ūdens līmeni projekta vietās – augstā purva biotopos, kurus ir ietekmējusi nosusināšana – tādējādi aizsargāt Eiropas un Latvijas nozīmes purva biotopus, augus un dzīvniekus.

Abrupt Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE in Europe - The event ecology, possible causes and implications

The study, based on the examination of 70 published and unpublished pollen profiles from Poland and supplementary data from the surrounding regions, shows that an abrupt, episodic Alnus population decline at the end of the first millennium CE was a much more widespread event than has been previously reported, spanning large areas of the temperate and boreal zones in Europe. The data from Poland suggest that the decline was roughly synchronous and most likely occurred between the 9th and 10th centuries, with strong indications for the 10th century.
